![]() Overall, this was definitely my favourite season. There was also the illogical nature of the Giant Realm, which, though I can personally forgive, is still inconsistent with how this franchise has worked in the past. I guess the parents know about Buzzsaw now? That's bad, I guess? It felt like they were just looking for anything to leave the season on a cliffhanger with, and randomly chose Buzzsaw attacking ICARIS. I also feel like the pacing was off at some points, and Alex was slightly pushed to the background (even if she still had some sassy one-liners.) Lastly, the cliffhanger at the end felt.underwhelming. (I just think noone should hook up with each other, they're 14 YEAR OLDS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, DREAMWORKS). That one scene in episode 5 STARTED nicely enough, but just descended into awkwardness pretty quickly. In season 5, it was a background detail, and was actually quite nicely done. None of the legacy dragons (Deadly Nadder, Cavern Crasher, Shellfire and Deathgripper) or new dragons (Octofin) were too badly executed (I actually loved how the Octofin was depicted as whale-like in it's temperament).Īs for what sucked, they REALLY pushed the whole Tom x Jun thing, which I disliked. The soundtrack is also impressive, utilising leitmotifs from previous seasons (like Jun's motif from S3E02 being used for Episode 6, or Tom and Thunder's flute-type music used in that same episode, among others) and even creating new motifs, like one for Eugene in episode 4. The new creatures (like the slugs and weird frog-things)were cute details. The animation also appears to have improved a lot in this season, and the Giant Realm is freaking beautiful. The whole "Dragoncite literally provides oxygen for the realms" was really cool to me, and it further elevates Sledkin as an antagonist. ![]() Buzzsaw felt more of an antagonist (when contrasted with previous seasons, where he felt more like a discount Dagur that did nothing dangerous), and Sledkin actually became an antagonist, in an impressive way (she perpetrates abuse of a Terrible Terror and feels no remorse about potentially killing children in a cave-in.). There were multiple times when the characters get into genuinely dangerous situations, and the elevated darkness of this season (srsly, those Deathgrippers getting chomped by the swooper in episode 4 was BRUTAL) combined with good character-writing means I actually felt invested into the conflicts. ![]() Speaking of, the stakes felt higher this season as well. The humour is more spot-on, and the situations and crises that the Club finds themselves in give opportunity for the voice actors to really shine. The ways in which both Tom and Thunder's and Eugene and Webmaster's relationships were executed were also pretty well done. I definitely enjoyed the characters more this season. This, to me, decreases the "lifeless cardboard cutouts of the Dragon Riders" vibes that they sorta gave out in the first couple seasons, and also builds our investment in them and their relationships with each other. Each of the characters feel more well written overall (ESPECIALLY Tom and Eugene, though the latter's writing is more inconsistent), and- I don't know whether this is just me- the characters express their emotions more openly, not just to us, but to each other. ![]()
